Qualified and Sustainable Jobs in Democratic Republic of the Congo

The management of the cooperatives has been professionalized and a joint commercialization unit has been put in place. Notwithstanding the above, cooperatives are not financially independent yet. There is a need to launch local added-value products and to start up some kind of local processing. Gender and environmental aspects are to be fully considered to ensure long-term sustainable development

Goal:

  • To generate qualified and sustainable job opportunities, improve marketing and new local processing of sesame within 3 rural cooperatives in central Congo

Strategy:

  • To carry out an external market survey focused on sesame so that a value chain can be analyzed and locally launched, on the basis of these 3 cooperatives’ capacities and small local businesses.
  • On-field advisory services and regular training

Beneficiaries:

  • 1,260 people (44% women): 1,110 members of 3 cooperatives and 150 local young business men/women.
