Banteay Prieb - Agriculture Project

Agriculture Project - Pig and chicken farm to achieve self-support of persons with disabilities

The overall aim of the project is to empower persons with disabilities by developing their potentials through skills training and inclusion into social and economic life in the society, so that they can enjoy their rights and regain their self-esteem.

1. Developing their potentials

Banteay Prieb offers vocational trainings to persons with disabilities. This agriculture program helps students to acquire farming/animal husbandry skills through which they can develop their potentials regardless of their physical disabilities. Students also practice in the fields of the Old and the New Farm of Banteay Prieb.

2. Skill training

Students learn agricultural skills both inside and outside the classroom. They study theory from 8 am to 3 pm. Then they practice their agricultural knowledge in the fields of the Old Farm from 3 pm to 4 pm. From 4 to 4:30 pm, students take care of vegetables and mushrooms and they feed the animals. One thing the students could not really practice this year was how to deliver piglets, because most of the mother pigs died from diseases.

3. Inclusion into socio-economic life

When the students of Banteay Prieb graduate, most of them go back home and support their families with their work. They are not a burden to their families anymore, since they now can participate in socio-economic life more actively than before. For at least 5 years after their graduation our outreach team visits the graduates at home. They support them in finding a job or starting their own business to have more sustainable sources to generate income.

4. Enjoy their rights and regain their self-esteem

Before coming to our Center, most of Banteay Prieb’s students used to stay at home and were not going outside. Since Cambodian people have a strong belief in Karma, disabilities are considered to be caused by their sins in former life. Many parents are ashamed of their child’s disability. However, when students come to BP, they make friends and do many things by themselves. They can regain their self-esteem and enjoy their rights with dignity, at last.
