Banana farming in Peru
With support from the ERBER Group, the Centro de Investigación y Promoción del Campesinado (CIPCA) supports smallholder farmers in Northern Peru around Piura in villages in the region of Sullana.
Here CIPCA offers educational programs and help in a variety of ways to over 1200 banana farmers and their families.
After one year of working with CIPCA, the inhabitants of Huangala, Chalacala and San Vicente organize farming collectives in order to export their bananas through companies such as Dole and Chiquita.
They learn how to grow and cook healthier food for themselves. Their children benefit from early childhood stimulation programs and health programs that include dental hygiene. Microloans help women start small businesses, which in turn allow them to send more of their children to school.
